Storing Your Garden Seeds: Creating a System That Works For You in 2024.

Storing Your Garden Seeds: Creating a System That Works For You in 2024.

Carol & Jamie of 2GalsHomesteading.com are your homesteading co-hosts. Jamie practices homesteading skills in town. Carol homesteads on the farm.
Storing garden seeds on your homestead is crucial for ensuring a bountiful harvest year after year. Proper storage helps maintain seed viability and protects against pests and environmental damage. Here are key points to remember:
Container Choice: Use airtight containers such as glass jars, metal tins, or plastic containers with tight-fitting lids to keep out moisture and pests.Cool, Dry Location: Store seeds in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold and seed spoilage. A basement or root cellar is ideal.Temperature Considerations: Seeds last longest when stored at cool, stable temperatures. Aim for 32-41°F (0-5°C) for most seeds.Darkness: Keep seeds in a dark location to protect them from light, which can reduce their viability over time.Humidity Control: Use silica gel packets or dry rice to absorb any excess moisture inside the storage container.Labeling: Properly label each container with the seed type and date of storage to keep track of their age and viability.Seed Saving: Consider saving seeds from your healthiest plants for future use, ensuring you have a supply of seeds adapted to your specific growing conditions.
By following these guidelines, you can preserve the quality and viability of your garden seeds, ensuring a successful harvest for years to come.
Perfectly preserve all your favorite foods with very little effort. Easily create a home food supply that is tastier, healthier, and more diverse than any other food preservation methods.

Ep. 21 - Fall Gardening Secrets Unveiled: Optimal Timing, Seed Selection, and Using The Internet

Ep. 21 - Fall Gardening Secrets Unveiled: Optimal Timing, Seed Selection, and Using The Internet

In this episode, Jamie and Carol discuss the importance of preparing for fall gardening while it's still summertime. They talk about the different plants that can be started from seed and direct-sowed, and advise listeners on the best time to begin planting. They also share some personal experiences and observations on the challenges of gardening in changing weather conditions.
SummaryThe hosts delve into the intricacies of fall gardening and emphasize the importance of timing. They advise listeners to determine the first frost date in their area and use the days of maturity on seed packets to determine the optimal planting time. The hosts also caution that certain crops, such as beets and carrots, require careful monitoring to avoid becoming woody or overripe. They stress the need to keep seeds moist during the germination process for successful growth. Overall, the episode underscores the importance of careful planning and timing in gardening.
The hosts also discuss how the internet has revolutionized gardening research. They note that while in the past, they had to rely on books from the library, they can now easily find a wealth of information by typing their questions into Google or visiting gardening websites. However, they caution that it can be overwhelming to sift through all the information available. One of the hosts shares a helpful video they found on the Epic Gardener website, which provided guidance on when to plant different crops. The hosts agree that the internet has made gardening information more accessible and easier to find.
In addition, the hosts share insights into their own garden spaces. One of them has free-range chickens that seem to help themselves to everything in the garden except for cacti. They speculate about whether the chickens have tried to eat the cacti but ultimately conclude that the chickens seem to leave them alone. This anecdotal evidence suggests that cacti may be a good plant to include in a garden with chickens, but it is important to note that this may not apply to all chickens or all types of cacti.
